Glossary

Yoga styles, sound healing terms, and certifications explained briefly — for anyone on their first retreat.

Vinyasa
A flowing yoga style where movement and breath are closely linked — one transition follows the next, often building in intensity.
Hatha Yoga
A classic, slower-paced yoga style with longer holds in individual poses (asanas) — a good entry point for beginners.
Yin Yoga
A very quiet, meditative style: poses are held passively for several minutes to gently stretch deeper connective tissue.
Restorative Yoga
A regenerative style using props (blankets, blocks) where the body is fully supported and at rest — relaxation instead of exertion.
Ashtanga
A dynamic, physically demanding yoga style with a fixed sequence of postures, synchronized with the breath.
Iyengar Yoga
A yoga style with strong emphasis on precise alignment and the targeted use of props.
Pranayama / Breathwork
Conscious breathing exercises to calm the nervous system or build energy — often practiced as its own part of a session.
Sound Healing / Sound Bath
A sound meditation where vibrations from singing bowls, gongs, or chimes are used for deep relaxation — usually experienced lying comfortably on the mat.
Singing Bowl
A traditionally Tibetan sound instrument that produces a long-sustaining, overtone-rich sound when struck or rubbed.
Yoga Therapy
An individually tailored yoga practice designed to support physical or mental conditions — usually delivered 1-on-1.
Mindful Morning
A short, mindful morning routine before the first yoga session — arriving in the body before movement begins.
RYS / RYT (Yoga Alliance)
RYS ("Registered Yoga School") certifies a training institution, RYT ("Registered Yoga Teacher") certifies an individual instructor — internationally recognized quality standards from Yoga Alliance.

A multi-day getaway to a special place that combines yoga practice, rest, and community — deliberately set apart from everyday life.
